Quick answer

To crochet a sari silk pumpkin, work a small circle in single crochet, increase to 30 stitches, crochet several rounds without increasing, then decrease, stuff, close and pull yarn through the pumpkin to create its signature ridges. Finish with a twig or crocheted stem.

Materials you’ll need

Multicolour sari silk yarn balls with pink, green, blue and earthy strands and a textured surface

Choose a hook that creates a firm fabric without obvious gaps. Irregular yarn can make stitch tops harder to see: feel for them, count carefully and mark the first stitch of every round.

For a shorter pumpkin, work fewer even rounds. For a taller pumpkin, add 1–2 even rounds before decreasing. Yarn consumption and dimensions will change.

Eight-step crochet tutorial

Expand each step as you work. Follow the written counts for exact instructions.

1. Make the magic ring

Make an adjustable magic ring and work 6 sc into it. Pull the centre closed, keeping it snug without overtightening. Check that you have 6 stitches and mark the first stitch.

2. Increase to 30 stitches

Follow rounds 2–5 in the pattern table. Check each round: 12, 18, 24, then 30 stitches. Each increase means working two single crochet stitches into one stitch.

3. Build the sides

Work rounds 6–11 without increasing: one sc in every stitch, 30 stitches per round. Move your marker and count at the end of each round.

4. Start decreasing and stuff

Follow rounds 12–14 to reduce to 24, 18, then 12 stitches. A decrease joins two stitches with sc2tog. Add fiberfill before the opening becomes too small. Adjust the stuffing for a rounded form without stretching gaps in the fabric.

5. Close the top

Complete round 15 with six decreases, leaving 6 stitches. Leave a generous yarn tail. Thread the tapestry needle through the remaining stitch loops and draw the opening closed.

6. Create the pumpkin ridges

Pass a strong yarn tail through the centre and around the outside. Repeat at evenly spaced positions for approximately 5–6 segments, pulling gently to shape the ridges. If sari silk breaks under tension, use a strong matching yarn. Secure the shaping yarn.

7. Add a stem

Securely attach a clean, dry twig without sharp edges. Alternatively, crochet a short chain, single crochet back along it and sew the strip into a stem shape. Sew the crocheted stem securely to the top.

8. Add a leaf and finish

Optionally attach a separately crocheted leaf and chain tendril. Secure all attachments, hide yarn ends and gently adjust the pumpkin’s shape.

Frequently asked questions

Is this suitable for beginners?

It is beginner-friendly if you can work single crochet, increases and decreases. Count every round and use a stitch marker. Textured yarn can make stitches harder to see, so take your time.

How much yarn does one pumpkin use?

Estimated yarn use is 20–30 g for one small decorative pumpkin. Actual consumption depends on yarn thickness, tension, height and construction. Make a sample before setting kit quantities.

What hook size should I use?

Start with an estimated 5–6 mm hook and adjust to your actual yarn. Aim for firm fabric without obvious gaps that let stuffing show.

Can I wash the finished pumpkin?

Follow the care instructions for your yarn, stuffing and attachments. Test colourfastness on a swatch. Do not assume the assembled pumpkin is machine washable.

Is it a toy for children?

No. This is a decorative pattern, not a children’s toy. Keep twigs, small detachable parts and loose fibres away from young children and pets.

Pattern, safety and care notes
